April 20-27, 1958
Building of a New Educational
Wing
Ground Breaking on Palm Sunday, March 22nd.  Construction
completed by the end of November.  Dedication of the new building
held on January 10, 1960.
Missions
1957:
Annual School of Missions - four consecutive Sundays in January
included supper, motion picture, and study and discussion groups
for all ages.

1964:
A new American Baptist Church started in Enfield.
1965:
With the growth of the Latino population, we had a
Spanish-American Theme/Family Night Dinner.  We also had a
guest preacher who was the head of Spanish work for the New York
Baptist City Society.  Donations of food, clothing, etc. were collected
for a new Cuban family arriving in Hartford.
Music Ministry
1961:
Grace Berry - Minister of Music
Three (3) active choirs: The Chancel Choir, the Deo Gratias Choir
and the Carillon Choir for children and youth
April 16, 1961:
The new Schantz pipe organ was dedicated with it's modern
two-manual pipe organ with about 20 ranks of pipes.
1963:
The choir presented the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah
directed by Mr. Clark Putnam with Grace Berry at the organ.
1965:
Bruce Hector became the Minister of Music and soon
organized a Bell Choir.
Activities, Programs and
Groups
  • Worship at 9:30am with classes for all ages at 10:45 am.
  • Three Baptist Youth Fellowship groups: the Intermediate, the
    Junior High and the Senior High
  • Numerous small groups: Men's Bowling League, the Goodwill
    Society, etc
  • Potluck suppers and meetings.
In 1962, a Conference on Christian Renewal was held
In 1964, a busload went to the Billy Graham rally in Boston
In the 60s, the church had a Theological Study Group.

Changes
  • 1963 - Miss Ethelyn Nichols resigned after 4 years as
    Christian Education Director
  • 1964 - Mrs. Grace Berry resigned after 19 years as organist
    and choir director
  • 1965 - Mr. Bruce Hector begins his ministry of 42 years
    of service to  First Baptist Church of West Hartford.

The Brown Years: 1967-1975
Missions
  • Dr. & Mrs. Gilliland-Nigeria
  • BYF to Puerto Rico in 1971
  • World Mission Campaign Sunday - April 9, 1967.
  • Social Action Committee active in taking action to assist
    minority groups to obtain housing in West Hartford.
Music Ministry
  • Chancel Choir incresed in numbers under Bruce Hector's
    leadership
  • Folk music very popular
  • 4 active choirs: the Chancel Choir, Deo Gratias Choir,
    Carillon Choir and Bell Choir
  • In 1973, new choir robes presented by Louise Nelson in
    memory of her husband
  • Laurence Nickerson gave a baby grand piano in memory of
    his parents
  • 1974, 7 more bells added to the Bell Choir who performed at  
    Christmastime at the Bushnell Memorial.

  • 1968 - a new office created out of the "so-called Fire Place

The Crosby Years: 1976 - 1983
Missions
  • We hosted missionaries from Zaire and India and held a
    supper meeting to hear from a Burmese pastor about
    renewal of the church in his country
  • May,1977, we opened our chapel to a Chinese congregation
    led by Rev. Charles Kwok using the Mandarin dialect.
  • 1976, a campus ministry program was begun and we
    reached out to a number of different campuses in the
    Hartford area.
  • Spanish missions was an emphasis.  At Sunday evening
    programs in 1976, we heard speakers from local Spanish
    ministries.
  • Ten members of the BYF (Baptist Youth Fellowship) along
    with three adults, went on a mission trip t o Puerto Rico.
  • May 23rd, 1981, two busloads including some members from
    the Chinese church attended the Billy Graham Crusade at
    the Hartford Civic Center.
Music Ministry
  • Annual hymn services were held, consisting entirely of music
    by choir and congregation
  • Helen Ellis was a frequent pianist
  • In 1979, our choir joined 300 other choir singers at St.
    Joseph Cathedral for the 50th anniversary of the Hartford
    Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
  • Many joint concerts were held, some included a hymn festival
    with Westminster Presbyterian,the Chapel Singers in 1979
    which included tow of our youth and the Sunshine Singers
    from the Phillipines presented a concert in 1979.
  • In 1980, Margo Early, our new alto soloist, presented Songs
    for an April Evening.
  • In 1984, Geri Spano appeared as soprano soloist and Danilo
    Militar, bass, is first mentioned this year.
  • In January of 1981, a Winer Festival of Comgregations
    involving nearly 600 congregations from Greater Hartford
    was held at St. Joseph Cathedral.

Groups
  • Four class offerings for adults on Sunday mornings
  • Wednesday evening group on "The Strange Silence of the
    Bible in the Church" in which Dr. Neal Testerman was one of
    the leaders
  • Thursday evening "Living With Your Teenager" series led by
    Rick Lanz
  • Dr. Henry Millan offered a seminar on "To Be a Man, To Be a
    Woman"
  • A six session workshop on "As Parents Grow Older" was
    offerd to help children and relatives better understand
    conditions of the elderly.
  • "Summer Share" was offered in 1978 and 1979 for an
    opportunity for generations to learn together thorugh Bible
    Study and workshops.
  • In 1981, the BYF SENT (Sixth, Eighth, Ninth Teens) for
    Junior High Youth announced going without food for 30
    hours to raise money for hungry people around the world
    called "planned famine."  The program was sponsored by
    World Vision International.

Building and Grounds
  • In August 1979, as result of a sever storm, part of the
    steeple lay on the ground, trees uprooted and debris was
    everywhere.  By 1980, the steeple was repaired.  
  • A new boiler was installed and siding replaced paint on the
    church and on our second parsonage.  All of this was made
    possible by a successful Steps in Renewal Campaign led by
    Dr. Phillip Trowbridge.
